Charlotte
Connell:
Charlotte Connell, owner of Cerro Verde Greenhouses, grew up in nearby
Howard County, Md. Early influences were her grandfather faming with
draft horses, and her mother's skill in horticulture and gardening.
Frequently, the whole family helped at a friend's commercial greenhouse
by transplanting spring vegetables during the Easter break. These early
experience in the company of mother, aunts, cousins and church friends
made a lasting impression.
In the
mid-seventies, Charlotte and her husband moved to West Virginia to grow
apples. Several years later they purchased their farm near Winchester,
Va., where they produced heirloom apple varieties and blueberries. Not
having enough to do, Charlotte established Cerro Verde in 1995,
originally supplying rooted cuttings to other greenhouse growers. With
extensive networking and some international travel to obtain new
varieties, the Cerro Verde collection soon grew to point of overflow.
Farmer's markets let to plant festivals and an increase opportunity to
interact with customers who were interested in a diverse plant
collection. As with the fruit production, the herbs are grown with ever
using harmful chemicals.
So, true to
her roots, Charlotte gardens, propagates, educates, still keeps a horse,
and now has enough to do!
